Second-Ranked Raiders Close Dual Season with 29-18 Victory Over Pacific

With the second-ranked Southern Oregon wrestling team resting most of its starters, the Raiders overcame an early deficit to defeat Pacific 29-18 in the final dual of the 2011-12 season Friday night at Stoller Center.

Southern Oregon, 11-3 overall, has a break next week before the Raiders host the 2012 NAIA Western Region Qualifying Tournament on Feb. 18 at Bob Riehm Arena. The loss dropped Pacific’s dual record to 3-9 for the season.

Pacific’s lightweights  gave the Boxers an early 15-0 lead before Travis Patrick ended the PU run with a pin of Ricky Ridela in 1:08 to take the 149-pound match. Dalton Urrutia picked up a 16-5 major decision victory over Michael Tyner in the 157 and No. 3 Derek Mestrovich (Boise, Idaho/Skyview) earned a 13-10 decision over Bruce Balcita in the 165.

Caleb Malychewski gave Pacific its final win of the night with a 7-6 decision over Tucker Van Matre in the 174, and the Raiders closed out the dual with victories in the final three matches. Fourth-ranked Austin Vanderford pinned Andrew Bolton in 1:30 to win the 184 and Derek Rottenberg picked up an 11-0 major decision victory over Wes Heredia to take the 197. Tenth-ranked Bubba Owens closed out the dual with a pin of Will Ulrich in 1:24 to take the heavyweight match.
