First, there was Glee. Then came Pitch Perfect, and now…Dulcet, Southern Oregon University’s on campus, student led A Cappella group. The group started 11 years ago and was compiled of music and theater majors. At the time, it was a smaller group of about 8 members; 4 boys and 4 girls. The typical songs that Dulcet sings are often songs that would be heard on the radio such as: I’m Yours by Jason Mraz, If I Die Young by The Band Perry, and Rolling in the
Deep by Adele.
Now, the group is in need of new members. You can be a fellow A Cappella singer. The need for auditions are due to the loss of members from graduation and transfer students. The group has now been left with 5 people; 4 girls and 1 boy. Dulcet has recently hosted auditions and was able
to obtain more female members. These current auditions will be focused on finding more male members, as well as more members overall for future loss of graduate and transfer students.
Auditions are on-going. If there is a conflict for anyone auditioning they can email Makayla Reed to schedule what is called a rolling audition.
Reed had some words of advice to those auditioning, “There is no need to feel nervous, we know how it goes, we are a super easy going group”. She asked that vocalists come prepared with a verse and chorus of a song to sing that matches their voice best.
Once the group has found the needed members to help balance out their sound, they hope to have future performances. They plan on performing in the Hannon Library more often than they have in the last few years. Once their name gets out there, they plan on performing gigs in town at local hot spots.
At the end of the school year they will have a concert called “Dulcet in
the Dark”, where they perform every song they have learned throughout the year. This concert is free to all students. In the next year they expect to perform in the ICCA’s, which is the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella. It is the largest A Cappella competition in the nation, they compete regionally, and then nationally.
To all those interested, auditions are held Wednesday, January 21, 2015 from 5:30 – 7:30pm in the music building. Rolling auditions are also held by scheduling an appointment through emailing Makayla at dulcetbusiness@gmail.com.
