October is the month for sports

For those of you who have not yet been properly welcomed, welcome to the month of October.

As a sports fan, this is my favorite time of year.  It doesn’t matter which sport you watch, or which sport is your favorite, it is most likely going on and getting interesting in the month of October.

This week, the BCS standings came out, finally. And what a season it has already been. Both number 1’s, Alabama and Ohio State have dropped from the top spot in stunning defeats against conference opponents.

It is week six and the NFL is just starting to get interesting.  The 1972 Miami Dolphins got to pop the champagne corks early this season, when the Kansas City Chiefs, the last undefeated team of the 2010-11 season were beaten in week five.  Yes, that’s right, the Kansas City Chiefs were the final undefeated team this season.

Baseball is deep in both the ALCS and NLCS and the World Series is right around the corner.  NBA basketball is in the preseason and tip off to the regular season is in a week.  And don’t forget about Midnight Madness.  Although it isn’t March yet, college basketball is underway.

The big three major sports not your thing?  Well, Nascar is deep in the Chase for the Sprint Cup and Jimmie Johnson is looking like he is gong to grab the Cup for the fifth straight year.  Hockey has already dropped the puck and soccer is still going on everywhere because well, it’s soccer and it’s always going on everywhere.

October really is the best month in sports.  Upsets, shootouts, homeruns and big wins.  That is October.  It is unscripted and only comes around once a year.  So, this weekend right before kickoff, or tip-off or first pitch or the engine starts, stop and appreciate the atmosphere of October.
