Southern Oregon University’s Native American Student Union held their 19th Annual Spring
Powwow over the weekend in the McNeal Pavilion.
The Grand Entry of dancers was held Saturday at 1 p.m., with many different tribes represented in the friendly competition.
Program Coordinator of SOU’s Native American Studies program, David West, gave the opening prayer.
In his prayer, West referred to the powwow as a chance “for us to dance for those who cannot dance, to sing for those who cannot sing… to honor the ancient traditions that bind us together.”
West’s words were very fitting, with senses of openness, community and belonging strongly present over the weekend’s events.
