Athena in Velvet: a celebration of chocolate, wine and the feminine divine

Community members gathered in a celebration of chocolate, wine and feminine divine at Ashland’s CultureWorks, May 20.

Athena in Velvet is an event sponsored and organized by Southern Oregon University’s Women’s Resource Center to encourage and support women’s creativity and to celebrate like a goddess. People indulged themselves in vast amounts of chocolate, while enjoying a range of entertainment.

The night started off with a sensational show by belly-dancing troupe Shalimar. Following the dancers was Oregon State University student and comedian Kasey Koop, who spoke about a variety of things from her Greyhound bus ride to veganism. While her jokes were a little raunchy, they were still met with laughs and were enjoyed by many.

Manda Bryn and the Greymatters followed the comedian’s act with some alternative indie-Americana music. They performed a variety of songs, including those written by Manda Bryn herself, and had people at the event dancing to the beats.

The event was led by SOU student and WRC employee Emma Wilson, who said that overall, the event “portrays the strength and creativity that women carry.”

Wilson’s hopes are that this event is carried on in the coming years and only grows to be even more powerful.
