Second-Ranked SOU Wrestling Finishes California Triple-Header with 2-1 Mark

The second-ranked Southern Oregon wrestling team opened its Saturday afternoon triple header with a 25-3 loss to NCAA Div. I No. 20 Stanford, but the Raiders followed that up with a 22-18 win over Menlo and a 22-15 victory over NCAA Div. II San Francisco State.

The 2-1 day improves the Raiders’ dual record to 8-3 this season, while a separate group of SOU wrestlers traveled north to the Clackamas Open, where eight Raiders placed. Southern Oregon will return to action with a couple home duals next weekend, hosting Pacific on Friday and Simon Fraser on Saturday with both matches scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bob Riehm Arena.

Southern Oregon 22, San Francisco State 15

Both Southern Oregon and San Francisco State took five of the 10 bouts, but the Raiders used a pair of pins and a major decision to earn the seven-point victory. Top-ranked Mitchell Lofstedt pinned Sergio Valdez in 2:03 to take the 125-pound matchup. Brock Gutches wrestled above his typical 174-pound slot and pinned Zachariah Jimenez in 2:41 to take the 184-pound bout. Sixth-rankedJimmy Eggemeyer added an 11-1 major decision victory over Dylan Phillipy in the 149.

Southern Oregon 22, Menlo 18

The Raiders won six of the 10 bouts to pull out a narrow victory over Menlo in SOU’s second dual of the day. Lofstedt picked up a 14-2 major decision in the 125-pound bout, fourth-ranked Kyle Wirkuty earned a 12-4 major decision victory in the 141 and Ethan Hinton earned a 21-3 technical fall victory to clinch the 197 and provide the highlights for SOU.

Stanford 25, Southern Oregon 3

Wirkuty picked up the Raiders’ only win of the match, defeating Stanford’s Alex Manley by a 5-3 overtime decision in the 141-pound weight class. The match featured a double forfeit in the 125 and only one major decision, with all the other bouts decided by seven or fewer points.

Clackamas Open

Tyler Thomas led the way for the Raiders in Clackamas, earning a championship in the 174-pound bracket. Thomas earned three pins among his five matches en route to the title, including a pin over Daniel Agao of Yakima Valley Community College in 1:23 in the championship round.

Derek Rottenberg won his first three matches in the 184-pound bracket to earn a slot in the championship match, but he fell by 7-3 decision to Simon Fraser’s Clete Hanson, giving the Raider a second-place finish. Brian Lemmon also earned a second-place finish, as he knocked off Oregon State’s Alex Cornellius in the first round and won the following two matches to earn a championship matchup with OSU’s Seth Thomas. Thomas came out on top in the 165-pound title match, defeating Lemmon by 9-0 major decision.

In the 141, Brad Tamashiro opened with a first-round victory before falling to Oregon State’s Chayse Garrison by 4-2 decision in the semi-finals. A win in the consolation semis earned Tamashiro a spot in the third-place match. Jordan Lowe dropped his first match of the day, a 5-3 decision to Oregon State’s Anthony Harris, before rebounding to win the next three consolation rounds to earn a bout with Tamashiro for third place. Tamashiro defeated Lowe by injury default to take third place, with Lowe earning fourth-place honors.

Travis Patrick fell to Clackamas’ Alex Ballard by 8-1 decision in the third-place match of the 149-pound bracket, earning fourth place. Trinity Castner defeated Clackamas’ Clinton McAlester by injury default to earn fifth place in the 149-pound bracket, and Cody Jones defeated Yakima Valley’s Michael Ayala by 8-0 major decision to earn fifth place in the 165.
