SOU Softball Finishes Simpson Tournament with 3-3 Record

Southern Oregon dropped a 15-5 game to host Simpson in Saturday’s opener before rebounding for a pair of afternoon wins, knocking off Patten 5-1 and Menlo 10-1 to close out the Simpson Tournament.

Southern Oregon improves to 3-3 overall this season, with two of the Raiders’ losses coming to ranked teams on Friday. The Raiders will return to action Feb. 23, when they will host the annual SOU Tournament at US Cellular Fields in Medford. Game stats from the Simpson Tournament were not made availailable by the tournament hosts.

Simpson battered Southern Oregon in Saturday’s opener, scoring four runs in the first inning and adding six in the fifth and five more in the sixth to earn a 15-5 six-inning victory. The Red Hawks tallied their 15 runs on 15 hits with three errors, while SOU finished with five runs on eight hits with three errors.

Karlie Stephens took the loss for SOU, with Tinity Cutt earning the complete-game victory for Simpson. Irene Barrantes and Stephanie Vandenbusch each homered for the Raiders, but it was not enough as the Simpson offense erupted for 15 runs.

The Raiders bounced back to knock off Patten 5-1 in their second game of the day, scoring all five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after trailing 1-0 since the top of the first. Jordyn Kurtz picked up the win for the Raiders in relief of Chelsea Talbert, with Kurtz helping her own cause by hitting a home run for SOU. Julia Willison added a homer in the sixth as the Raiders finished with five runs on nine hits with no errors in the game.

Southern Oregon finished the day strong with a 10-1 five-inning victory over Menlo in the nightcap. Kurtz picked up her second win of the day as the Raiders scored five times in the first inning and added five more runs in the fifth, finishing with 10 hits and one error. Jessica Cobb took the loss for the Oaks, who finished with six hits in the game.
