Tenth-ranked Corban built a 16-point halftime lead and the Warriors coasted to a 78-64 victory over Southern Oregon in Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball action Friday night at C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Southern Oregon falls to 14-14 overall and 5-12 in conference play, while Corban improves to 20-6 overall and 14-3 in the CCC and clinches at least a share of the regular season conference crown. Southern Oregon will travel to Eugene for a Saturday matchup with Northwest Christian in the 2011-12 regular season finale at 5:30 p.m.
Cassandra Tiggett scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Raiders. RaTanya Newsome added 12 points, four steals and three assists in the loss.
Shayla Fetters shot 8-of-13 from the field to finish with a game-high 20 points for Corban. Tess Bennett tallied 14 points and Katie Steigleman added 12 for the Warriors, while Emily Tsugawa posted 12 assists and Tara Vanweerdhuizen added 10 rebounds.
Fetters opened the game with a layup for Corban. After Krysten Copeland hit a jumper to tie it up at 2-2 Steigleman dropped a three-pointer and the Warriors led the rest of the way. They took their first double-digit lead midway through the first half when Fetters hit a trey to make it 19-9. The Raiders scored the next five points, but the Warriors closed the half on a 19-8 run to pull ahead 38-22 at the break.
Corban opened the second half on a 7-2 run to push its lead to more than 20 points for the first time, and the Warriors led by as many as 26 points late in the game before the Raiders finished the contest on a 19-7 run to reach the final score of 78-64.
Southern Oregon shot 29.5 percent (23-of-78) in the game, while the Warriors made 47.5 percent of their shots (29-of-61). The Raiders forced 28 Corban turnovers and out-rebounded the hosts by one, but the Warriors made eight of 17 shots from beyond the arc in the win.
