SOU Softball Drops First Game
Senior Day Sunday left the SOU Raiders with a busted winning streak in game 1, memories of season’s past between games, wet clothing from the few innings of game 2 the rain shortened and a reschedule for Monday afternoon at 2pm.
Game 1 found SOU leading 2-0 and in cruise control with Senior Karri Johnson mowing down batters allowing just one hit, while the offense worked together to score a couple of runs.
Unfortunately, the wheels on the bus fell off in the 6th inning when Eastern found multiple hits, loaded the bases, scored a couple runs 2-2 tie and chased Johnson from the circle.
Junior pitcher Jordyn Kurtz came to the circle shooting BB’s to the catcher, AND THEN… almost by accident, the Mountaineers Suzie Espinoza half-heartedly connected her bat with the ball, sending it to rightfield inches from the foul line.
The final score of 4-2 against an inferior team, lead to an awkward start to the senior day festivities intended to honor the sacrifices player have made to a career as a college athlete.
The honored seniors Danielle Batson 00, Emily Matekel 3, Karri Johnson 5, Mischa Meyer 9, Sarah Wharton 11 and Sara Stenson 19 were escorted onto the field by their parents to receive flowers, plaques, and poster size action portraits from their playing time at Southern Oregon University.
Game 2 was postponed due to rain until Monday at 2 p.m. with Eastern leading 3-2 going into the bottom of the third.
Eastern scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st,then SOU chipped away with a pair of runs, before rain finally made conditions unplayable in the middle of the third inning.
