Battle of the Bands coming to the Britt Ballroom

Southern Oregon University’s KSOC radio will be giving students a chance to get tuned up Friday, May 6, in the Britt Ballroom.

At least 13 musical performances have been signed up to hold down the stage at this year’s Battle of the Bands, which begins at 7 p.m., has free admittance, and is open to all ages.

A top cash prize of $500 has been set aside for winning band, which will be determined by a panel of undetermined judges. Second place is expected to take home around $300, and third place should pocket $100, said KSOC station manager Drew Bechard.

“It’s going to be a big event,” Bechard said. “It will give local bands the ability to get their music out for people to enjoy … and students a chance to hear up-and-coming bands from around here.”

Rules for participation require that at least 50 percent of the band member be students a either SOU, Rogue Community College, or Ashland High School. Bechard said, the majority of the bands are made up by SOU students.

With the current line up, each band is expected to play  for about 15 to 20 minutes.
